In this paper we consider the properties of the element mi in Modern Greek, as a negator, a question particle, and a complementizer. It is argued that there is a single mi which is the equivalent of an indefinite pronoun, with the properties of a polar-ity item. It occurs in contexts where alternative propositions or properties are in-troduced, such as matrix and embedded questions (selected by certain predicates). The negative reading is attributed to the presence of focus in the relevant environ-ments. As a negator then under focus, the alternatives take the form of opposition. |
